Rockville, MD – James G. Davis Construction Corporation (DAVIS) has been awarded the contract to provide preconstruction services for the proposed 65,000-SF expansion project at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The highly anticipated project, which includes a proposed River Pavilion floating on the Potomac, will be constructed south of the existing facility and will add for the first time dedicated facilities to serve the Center’s growing arts education programs. The project is being designed by Steven Holl Architects, making it the second project on which DAVIS has worked with the internationally acclaimed architect – the first was the award winning Swiss Embassy Residence in Washington, DC that was completed in 2006. Preconstruction efforts began in December 2013.
The expansion project will include rehearsal space as well as dedicated classroom space and multipurpose rooms. Public access spaces will include underground circulation space and garage space, gardens, and an outdoor video wall upon which simulcast performances and other multimedia events may be projected. The underground garage will provide space for bus parking and will be concealed beneath a landscaped terrace.
DAVIS previously completed a curtainwall replacement and garage repairs at the John F. Kennedy Center.
