Local General Contractor Diverted 10,566 Tons of Construction Waste from Landfills in 2013

Rockville, MD – Professionals from James G. Davis Construction (DAVIS) diverted 87 percent of building materials from landfills in 2013. This is an increase of six percent over the last two years, and continues to exceed the corporate construction waste management plan guidelines, which mandate that 75 percent of material by weight of all waste generated on-site be recycled or salvaged for reuse.

Out of the 10,566 tons diverted in 2013 from new construction, renovations, and interior build-out projects using preferred waste management vendors, 9,178 tons was recycled, including concrete, metal, wood, cardboard, drywall, and plastics.

The Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that as much as 170 million tons of building-related construction and demolition debris was generated in the U.S., and that LEED projects are responsible for diverting over 80 million tons of waste from landfills. “At DAVIS we see ourselves leading the change with our corporate commitment to recycling construction waste we generate as much as possible, regardless of a project’s LEED status,” said Peter Ukstins, LEED AP BD+C and Director of Integrated Construction.

Beyond its recycling efforts, DAVIS is working to reduce the environmental impact of business operations while delivering the best possible solutions to clients. Through negotiated rates within an established network of preferred waste management vendors in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, DAVIS is able to provide added savings to each project.

“We’ve done our research, and we know exactly what facilities these preferred vendors use when diverting waste. Our vendors walk the walk, and therefore we are able to talk the talk to our clients,” said Ukstins.

With 68 LEED professionals on staff, DAVIS is committed to delivering comprehensive sustainability services to owners of buildings in the mid-Atlantic region.
