Rockville, MD – James G. Davis Construction (DAVIS), a leading general contractor in the Washington, DC area, announced that construction of the historic Georgetown Car Barn located at the western end of M Street NW has kicked off, with façade and terrace restoration underway. The scope of work for the design-build project includes a mechanical systems upgrade, restroom renovations, elevator replacement and the build-out of interior garage space into classrooms and offices.
“DAVIS has a long standing history in DC and we are honored to work on a landmark building that is such a significant part of DC’s history,” said Vice President Matt Weirich, who leads DAVIS’ education market sector.
Other than the towers of Georgetown University, the Georgetown Car Barn is widely considered the most distinct building in town. The Car Barn now houses the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute and Masters of Business Administration program, and boasts a colorful history. The site was originally a tobacco warehouse built in 1761, and later on during the Civil War, home to the city’s horse-drawn trolley cars.
The project is expected to complete in May 2015. It is being developed by Douglas Development.
