Arlington, VA — On Thursday, October 16th, SIGAL Construction Corporation celebrated the Dedication and Ribbon Cutting of Edward M. Felegy Elementary School located in Hyattsville, Maryland. The new 92,000 SF elementary school teaches Pre-K through fifth grade and is adjacent to an existing middle school which remained occupied during construction. Designed by Hord Coplan Macht, Edward M. Felegy Elementary is Prince George’s County’s first neighborhood arts integration school where students are given the opportunity to explore a variety of arts programs taught by specialist teachers in addition to traditional academic subjects.
The new school features a flexible room that serves as auditorium with raised stage, indoor gymnasium and cafeteria; additionally, there are choral and instrumental music rooms, visual arts and dance facilities, classrooms equipped with SMART boards, and administrative offices. The split level design of the school creates a distinct interior separation between the Pre-K and kindergarten and the older elementary school students.
Vegetated roofs and canopies, sunshades, clerestory and naturally day lit spaces, bio-swales, geothermal wells, and locally sourced materials reinforce the building’s sustainable goals and support the targeted LEED Gold certification.
Also in attendance at the event were The Honorable Marc Tartaro, The Honorable Rushern L. Baker III, The Honorable Paul G. Pinsky, The Honorable Will Campos, Gloria Mikolajczyk, and several other members of the Prince George’s County Board of Education.
