The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Baltimore District has awarded Grunley/Goel Joint Venture, LLC, a joint venture between Grunley Construction Co., Inc. and Goel Services, Inc., a $7.5 million contract to expand Fort Detrick’s Education Center by 18,000 square feet and construct a new 10,000 square-foot community auditorium within Building 1520. Two buildings will also be demolished, and site restoration performed. The project will seek LEED certification.
The education center will receive a new building entrance with aluminum curtain wall system, a vegetated membrane roof, and a new second floor with associated elevator and staircase. New space will be created for classrooms, offices, and conference rooms and a connector link will join the center to the adjacent existing library. The auditorium will seat 350 patrons, and include theater lighting and new audio-visual and communication systems. New energy-efficient mechanical, plumbing, electrical systems will be installed throughout. The project is scheduled to get underway in October and wrap-up by July 2013. This is the second project the joint venture has undertaken on the Fort Detrick campus.
