Arlington, VA – SIGAL Construction Corporation is pleased to announce that the Hampton Inn Washington, DC/White House, located at 1729 H Street NW, has achieved LEED® NC v2009 Gold certification. Through the collaborative efforts of SIGAL, OTO Development, and Gordon and Greenberg Architects, the project was able to meet and exceed sustainable goals.

The adaptive reuse of the Kiplinger Editor’s Building transformed the once deadline-driven workplace into a modern, 116-room Hampton Inn located in the heart of DC’s Golden Triangle. The character of the iconic 10-story building, originally completed in 1950, was preserved through careful restoration of the limestone façade and by keeping exterior changes to the building to a minimum. The addition of a cantilevered canopy and the slight changes to the entrance of the building were designed and constructed to harmonize and enhance the existing building. The new hotel includes guest rooms, an indoor salt-water pool, conference rooms, business center, fitness area, breakfast area, and associated food prep kitchen. The focal point of the hotel’s public space is the great room in the lobby, characterized by custom lighting, high ceilings and vibrant décor. New building systems, including a gas generator, elevators, and life safety systems were included in the renovation.

Major sustainable highlights include: careful selection of high efficiency building systems and appliances, recycling of construction materials, preservation of the exterior of the building, green planted roof, low flow plumbing fixtures, use of natural light when possible, and low VOC construction supplies. Points were also achieved for access to alternative transportation options.

“With each new LEED-certified building, we get one step closer to USGBC’s vision of a sustainable built environment within a generation,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and founding chair, USGBC. “As the newest member of the LEED family of green buildings, the Hampton Inn Washington, DC/White House is an important addition to the growing strength of the green building movement.”

SIGAL congratulates the entire project team on achieving this certification.
