Arlington, VA – SIGAL Construction Corporation and Arlington Public Schools celebrated the Groundbreaking Ceremony on the highly anticipated Arlington Elementary School #1 on Wednesday, March 19. Designed by VMDO Architects, the new 98,000 SF elementary school will accommodate over 600 students, helping the county achieve a fundamental goal of reducing overcrowding. The two-story building will have an exterior load bearing Insulated Concrete Formed (ICF) wall system and a structural steel floor system. The project also features exterior amenities and play areas including a basketball court.

This project will be the first Net-Zero Energy school on the east coast. “It is a real honor to be involved with building a green school that’s going to be Net-Zero,” said Gerard Heiber, LEED AP BD+C, President of SIGAL.

A Net-Zero Energy Building is one in which the total amount of energy used on an annual basis is roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created. The three key design features that will contribute to the goal of a Net-Zero Energy Building are the incorporation of a roof mounted 500 KW photovoltaic system, a 70 well geothermal system and an exterior wall system that utilizes insulated concrete forms that have a very high insulating R-value.

The project is adjacent to the existing Williamsburg Middle School which will remain fully operational. Construction is scheduled to be completed in August 2015.
