Square 54 was named ENR’s best retail/mixed use project nationwide. The $162.5-million development, located in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood, includes a five-level, below-grade parking deck; a ten-story commercial office building with ground-level retail, and two 12-story residential towers on the George Washington University campus.
Designed to LEED®-Gold certification standards, Square 54 incorporates innovative design elements including a condensate water fountain and irrigation system in the courtyard. Dewberry (formerly TOLK) provided mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineering design and coordination for this glass-encased urban showpiece. The project was designed for Boston Properties by the team of Pelli Clark Pelli Architects with Hickok Cole Architects, and constructed by Clark Construction Group.
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center was named ENR New York’s best healthcare project. Mandated under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC), this $183-million project divided Walter Reed Army Medical Center and relocated it from Washington, D.C., to Bethesda, Maryland, where it is now known as the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Continuity of operations was critical to the success of the project, involving careful sequencing of construction phases.
A design-build project, the scope included both the expansion of the medical facility and the addition of two parking structures. Dewberry assisted the joint venture of Clark Construction Group and Balfour Beatty Construction, under contract to the lead design firm of HKS, by providing engineering services including site grading, stormwater management, sediment control and utility design; landscape design, and LEED-Gold certification support. The work was completed for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Washington, D.C.
