Rockville, MD – Arlington Public Schools has selected Grunley Construction Company, Inc. (Grunley), a large Washington metropolitan area general contractor, as the prime contractor for the renovation of and addition to the Ashlawn Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia. The contract is valued at $15,147,000 and will be completed over a phased, 17-month duration.
The renovation work at the existing 69,668 SF elementary school entails creating larger, reconfigured classrooms, meeting rooms and specialty rooms. In addition, the structure’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire/life safety systems will be upgraded; a new elevator and stairwell will be added; and the roofing system will be replaced. The new addition will be a 28,008 SF three-story steel structure with 15 classrooms and a new media center. Site improvements will include a new entry plaza and parent drop-off drive; reconfiguration of the field/track area and playground spaces; landscaping; and stormwater management facilities.
The additional space created by this project is expected to allow the school’s enrollment to increase from the current 524 students to approximately 684 students. The project will be completed in March 2015. SHW Group LLP is the selected architect/engineer for the Ashlawn project.
Grunley Construction is ranked by Engineering News Record among the ‘Top Green Contractors’ and Top 400 Contractors” in the United States.
