Arlington, VA — SIGAL Construction Corporation celebrated the grand opening of the new Higher Education Center (HEC) at NVCC Loudoun Campus on September 24th. Located in Sterling, Virginia, the new state-of-the-art facility will help the campus continue its expansion and transformation into a progressive education campus.
The building is a three-story steel frame structure featuring a glass curtainwall. The remaining façade is brick and stone veneer with metal wall panels. A cantilevered second floor dramatically extends over the campus pond and features a walkway across the water to connect the building with the Learning Commons Complex. The Higher Education Center is designed to engage the students academically, technologically and socially. The academic facility houses classrooms, labs, common areas, a multi-purpose room, and office space as well as a sound isolated recording studio with control room. Advanced telecommunications capabilities help to facilitate the connection between NVCC and its partner universities. Construction of the project included temporary, partial drainage of the pond for building footings, retaining walls, landscape and hardscape improvements. Building systems included an 80 well geothermal field and other energy conserving systems. The project is targeting LEED® Silver certification for the project.
Dr. Julie Leidig, Provost of the Loudoun Campus, wrote in the program for the grand opening, “The vision for the HEC was created by a cross-campus team of faculty and staff who worked many hours with the design team from Perkins Eastman. Every detail, down to the selection of furnishings, has been planned with great care. The contemporary learning technologies allow students to maximize learning, individually or in groups. The light, airy spaces take advantage of Loudoun County’s natural beauty. The construction team from SIGAL took great care while building the project on an active campus. Our students, staff, and faculty take great pride in their new surroundings.”
Dr. Leidig welcomed speakers at the event including Bert Jones (Associate Vice Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System on behalf of Chancellor Glenn DuBois), Dr. Michael Wooten (Chairman, Northern Virginia Community College Board), Dr. Scott Ralls (President, Northern Virginia Community College), State Senator Jeffery T. Wexton (Senator of Virginia, 33rd District), Delegate Kenneth R. Plum (Virginia House of Delegates, 36th District), Delegate Thomas A. “Tag” Greason (Virginia House of Delegates, 32nd District), Delegate Kathleen J. Murphy (Virginia House of Delegates, 34th District), Supervisor Suzanne M. Volpe (Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, Algonkian District), and student Manuel Hernandez.
