The McKinley Building, a symbol of the University’s early days, will be brought into the twenty-first century in a manner that is both environmentally sustainable and historically sound.

Integration of the buildings historic elements with bold new construction, designed by Bowie Gridley Architects, will enhance the School of Communications converged approach to education. The project will include turning attic space into modern classrooms and offices by adding new clerestory windows in the existing façade. Additionally, a green roof, new roof terrace, media innovation lab, a150-seat theater for public forums and exhibitions, new MEP systems, two new elevators and a glass and metal panel curtainwall on the north and west elevations of the addition will be part of the project. Finally, a portion of the existing stone will be removed and reused on the addition and one of the new stairs. The state-of-the-art facility will more than triple the current space of the School of Communication.

Embracing American University’s commitment to environmental sustainability, a LEED® Silver certification is targeted for the project with delivery slated for fall 2013.

 *Rendering available upon request.

 About SIGAL Construction Corporation ###

More Information SIGAL Construction Corporation is renovating and upgrading a significant portion of the stately historic McKinley Building for American University.
