In<br \/>\taddition, Grunley will construct three additions to the school totaling 6,000 square feet. This is the fifth project Grunley will perform for the Fairfax County school system. Perkins Eastman is the Architect\/Engineer for the project.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe renovation will include enlarging classrooms and replacing windows, doors, finishes, and major building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical and special systems. An automatic sprinkler system will also be installed. The gymnasium and cafeteria will be modernized during the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe first addition will serve as the school&rsquo;s new administrative offices and main entry. The second addition will feature a gymnasium lobby. The third addition will include a corridor linking the existing building circulation. All three additions will be concrete masonry units with brick fa&ccedil;ades to match the existing building architecture. Site work will consist of reconfiguring a kiss-and-ride lot, utility and pavement work, and landscaping.<\/p>\n<p>\tThe Carl Sandburg Middle School houses 1,200 students and faculty. Students affected by the construction process will be moved into a series of mobile classrooms as the phasing of the project dictates.
