Lorton, Virginia – Skanska USA announced today the completion of Inova’s new healthcare facility, the Inova HealthPlex – Lorton, a LEED Silver certified, two story, 50,200-square-foot free standing emergency department dedicated to delivering quality, accessible healthcare to the community of northern Virginia.

Skanska celebrated the completion of the Inova HealthPlex with a ribbon cutting ceremony along with executives from Inova, including Mark Stauder, president and chief operating officer for Inova, Barbara Doyle, chief executive officer for Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, and local government officials representing Virginia, including Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, Congressman James Patrick “Jim” Moran, Jr., and Senator George L. Barker. The Inova HealthPlex – Lorton is comprised of two floors: The first floor houses an advanced, high-tech emergency department, equipped with exam, triage, and imaging rooms, and the second floor will ultimately hold an ambulatory service center.

During construction, Skanska’s project team performed complex work to ensure the HealthPlex is easily accessible to its patients, employees, and staff. For example, Skanska removed 110,000 cubic yards of soil from the site, which was once situated upon a large, isolated hill full of vegetation, to provide optimal space for the Inova HealthPlex’s convenient location.

As a result of Skanska’s site work, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, in cooperation with the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District and the Fairfax Tree Commission, honored Skanska with the 2012 Land Conservation Award in the Small Commercial category. In addition, Skanska worked closely with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to renovate roads surrounding the HealthPlex, to provide easier, more efficient access to the facility.

Skanska has a long and successful track-record constructing modern, innovative healthcare facilities, including outpatient centers, medical office buildings, hospitals, and lab and research space, and is committed to providing communities in the mid-Atlantic region and throughout the country with high quality healthcare.

Notable projects in the mid-Atlantic include: construction of QIAGEN’s new 117,500-square-foot campus in Germantown, Md., construction of the Wilmington Hospital for Christiana Care Health System, one of the country’s largest health care providers, and an expansion for the Nemours/Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware where Skanska is implementing various innovative prefabrication techniques to complete the project.

“Partnering with such a well-respected healthcare provider like Inova has been an extremely rewarding experience for Skanska, as we join in the effort to deliver northern Virginia with a modern, state-of-the-art facility to care for and treat patients,” said Bill Brennan, co-chief operating officer for Skanska USA Building’s Greater Washington D.C. office. “Today, we celebrate this major milestone with all the residents in this community who will soon have access to one of the region’s top hospitals.”
